Book Excursion Here

The Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium education team are here to assist with planning your excursion to all of our beautiful Gardens.

Learning experiences are aligned to the Australian Curriculum, employ TfEL pedagogies for students designed for students of all ages, and include educator-led and self-guided experiences.

Here you will be able to find some useful information including teacher planning documents, maps, supervision ratios and social scripts.

Please don't hesitate to contact us to discuss future bookings and assistance with planning an excursion via email DEWBGSchools@sa.gov.au or call 8222 9343.

The Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium Schools Education Program is supported by the Department for Education.

Class sizes

For educator-led experiences, including the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden program, a maximum of 30-students attend.

Please contact the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium education team if you would like to discuss options for your class.

Supervision

A teacher (or responsible person in a preschool setting) must be in charge of all camps or excursions.

Please ensure enough adult supervision to supervise your students. For the best experience for all involved we recommend the Department for Education ratios for excursions.

The minimum adult (staff, instructors and volunteers) to student ratio (excluding the teacher in charge or the responsible person in a preschool setting) is:

• 1:6 for preschool to year 2.

• 1:10 for years 3 to 7.

• 1:15 for years 8 to 12.

Some activities may have a higher ratio if the activity has a prescribed ratio and the risk assessment or needs of the students attending indicates a higher ratio is needed.

Please note: Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium Education Team may elect to cancel a booking if not enough supervision is provided.

Entrances and pathways
Adelaide Botanic Garden is wheelchair accessible from all entrance gates except for the Hackney Gate off Hackney Road due to its gradient.

The Garden has paved and bitumen paths running throughout the Garden.  There are some areas that have gravel or sawdust pathways. Most of the Garden is flat, though there are some steep pathways leading to the Sunken Garden and Threatened Seed Orchard.

Buildings
The Museum of Economic Botany has wheelchair access and is a quiet space.

The Bicentennial Conservatory has two pathways, one at ground level which is slightly undulating, and a raised boardwalk that weaves through the tree canopy.
