Weeds and introduced plants

Biosecurity is a major concern for our community, as the introduction of new weeds, or plant diseases, can impact industry and affect our agricultural businesses globally.

Detecting weed incursions is a key part of the work done by the herbarium team, working closely with groups across all South Australian regions.

Over 50 new weed species have been added to the South Australian plant Census as naturalised or questionably naturalised in the State since 2017, with specimens being added to the preserved collection in the Herbarium to reflect these new records.
