Our Science program is valued by the community as an authority on South Australian Flora and plants, algae and fungi.

We work to actively support the recognition of South Australia’s biodiversity and it’s conservation.

We provide a ‘go to’ publicly available evidence base of botanical knowledge, as well as deliver high quality scientific research and botanical knowledge resources across the disciplines of botany, horticulture, biology, conservation of the natural environment and history related to our botanical collections.

Our staff undertake work that supports the restoration of threatened plant species to the wild, and we participate in partnerships with national and international initiatives contributing to biodiversity outcomes on a global scale.

We are delivering science that supports curated living and preserved collections and enhances visitor experiences and lifelong learning, and our science team shares knowledge and supports public programs that improve our community’s connection to plants.

To achieve this we not only provide in-person engagement opportunities, but we deliver empirically-derived technical data sets and use our expertise to provide interpreted, synthesised and integrated science outcomes to meet the community’s needs.

We are also training the next generation of botanically aware South Australians who can support BGSH goals and values, and we work towards protecting our the biodiversity of the wild places of our state and a sustainable future for South Australia.
