The State Herbarium of South Australia contains preserved plant, algal and fungal specimens that provide a point-of-truth for the presence of a plant in a particular place at a particular time.
These collections have many uses, but one of the most important is that along with other botanical information, specimen record data is made available to researchers, students and the public in South Australia and around the world.
The data is downloaded from online sources millions of times a year, providing a widely-used evidence-base, helping to inform decision making.
Along with the databases, the expertise of staff provides an authoritative role by directly contributing to the management of our native and introduced flora.
Sharing our knowledge, our collections and our expertise has been a priority for the Science team at BGSH.
Our research staff undertake a broad range of activity to advance the field of botany.
At the State Herbarium, we work to share out collections, knowledge and advice with our partners.
