It is the remaining evidence of what was called the Adelaide Lunatic Asylum, which one stood in the southeast corner of Adelaide Botanic Garden, and served as its morgue.
The hospital for the 'insane' stopped operating as such in 1902, and was then used as a hospital for infectious diseases. It was demolished in 1938.
The Deadhouse has since served as a toolshed for garden staff, and is occasionally used as a venue for art exhibitions.
Visit in winter to see a stunning collection of Aloes and a quince tree in vibrant red bloom around the outside of this historic building.
